1997 Ford F-350 2WD 5.8L
I have a 1997 Ford F-350 5.8L V8 2WD, E4OD transmission. I bought the truck and the owner had said that the trans went out and that it had lost spark. The spark wasn't a big issue, and I got that fixed quick and had her running. I then out of curiosity drove it around the yard to see if I could get the transmission to act up, and the only thing I found while crawling around the yard was that reverse didn't work. With that, I wasn't going fast enough to get it to shift, so I took it out on the road and tested it there. While driving, first gear was fine and had absolutely zero issues, but then trying to shift to second it seemed to "hunt" for the gear. It would go into 2nd, come out, go back in and come out. I'm not a big transmission guy and have never really messed with automotive transmissions, as I work on utility equipment and wood chippers. I've been doing research on this transmission and have heard they're not a good transmission to rebuild if you've never done a rebuild before so I'm not quite sure I want to just take it out and rebuild it knowing that they have tight tolerances in these transmissions. Based off my research, I think the transmission is junk and more then likely needs a rebuild, but I'm also curious to see if it might possibly be the shift solenoids? Any information or further diagnostic help would be appreciated, I have no limit to exactly how far I'd be willing to go, as long as I can diagnose this without having to put more than $200 into diagnostics myself. Worst comes to worse, I have a buddy who has a low mileage trans out of his that I can buy but I'd like to try fixing this one myself. Motor is bone stock but it does have a service bed but despite its size, is quite light and I don't think it would effect its handling or load too much
