Angry 2012 4wd not working

2012 f250 lariat, 6.2 gas, auto. haven't had this truck long and just now needed to use the 4wd. it does not work. hope i can say i'm stupid for not finding the issue after someone here tells me what it is.
has manual hubs and they are locked in. turn the **** on the dash to 4whigh. dash, very shortly, says "4x4 processing" then gone. says same thing when i switch back to 2wd. no other light in the dash. the front drive shaft turns but, it turns all the time, even in 2wd. found the truck apps on the dash and it shows that only the rear is engaged. owners manual is worthless for this. it has the feature where you can pull the 2wd/4wd **** out. makes no difference. don't wish to take it to a shop and look more foolish than now if it's simple.

anyone want to give me a place to start? thanks in advance.

purchased from a used car dealer, not a ford dealership. the very little warranty they gave is gone but i'll check for info. thanks.

well, no go with a new motor. installed today and have new messages. first, like before, it says 4x4 i process. then, this is new, it says "shift delay- pull forward". i did just that and then it says "check 4x4" and a picture of a wrench. does the same forward or reverse, hi or low range, hubs in or out. so, still no 4x4. ???????

Might pay to look into the transfer case for it not shifting into 4WD.. If hubs are working and manually locked , rest is done by transfer case.
Motor on transfer case may not be working..
