Default 89 F250 loses power to wheels

I have an 89 F250. Very ocassionally it loses power to the wheels while still running. After letting it sit in neutral and audibly grind for five or so minutes, it regains power and works like nothing happened. Here's what I know so far.

- The clutch itself is almost new and catches great. It is definitely not slipping.
- I drained the transmission fluid and it was clean. A little dirty, but no chunks of metal like you'd expect if something broke.
- I'm fairly certain it is not the transfer case. I crawled underneath it the second time it happened, and it sounded like the noise was coming from the FRONT of the transmission.
- The engine doesn't seem to care and just keep sucking gas like its got a milkshake on a hot day.

Like I said before, it's very inconsistent and just happens whenever. If it breaks again I can fogure out more and report back. I'm just having a hard time thinking of what it would be where it would stop and then start working again, other than the clutch plate itself. Please help.

You could be right.
Who replaced the clutch?

The reason I ask is , from your description, noise coming from front of trans , The front of the trans has an input shaft that is splined to the clutch disc..
If that input shaft was worn and the disc is hanging up ,it could produce what you are hearing and getting.. The only real way to be sure is to remove the trans and clutch assy and look at the disc and pressure plate and input shaft.. Something is not right in there because it should not be making any kind of noise..

If the vehicle has a hydraulic clutch system, it could have air trapped in the system that when the air gets heated it expands and produces the same result as depressing the clutch pedal. You may need to have a good shop check this out and you might expect to replace the pressure plate,,clutch disc and release bearing assy.
This is all speculation until the examination is done. Always obtain an estimate before agreeing to have any work done. It could get a little expensive..
