Confused engine shut down after hill climb or at Crest of hill.
New diesel owner and just had to have my truck bulletproofed due to a blown head gasket premature at 120,000. When I first purchased said vehicle almost 3 months ago she was a monster. A 2004 6.0 F-350 SD crew cab Dually 8ft bed and she could lay rubber. Now not 2 weeks out of the shop after having her studded as well as numerous other parts replaced, she cant even pull an eight thousand pound travel trailer up a hill with out reaching the top and dying out. Or not having something in tow and everything peg out like it cut off and then start back up running. The mechanic took it out and said nothing is wrong with it even though I was stuck this evening on a hill. When i tried to turn her over the prime pump made no noise but the glow plug light illuminated and went out. It took several minutes to get her started but couldnt hear the injector pp prime anything for that amount of time. Would that be just a loose connection?
The 6.0L doesn't have a priming pump per se. The fuel pump that feeds the injectors is in the housing that contains the primary fuel filter (under the driver's frame rail). The entire component is called the Horizontal Fuel Conditioning Module (HFCM). It draws the fuel out of the tank and then feeds a secondary filter that then flows to the injectors.
Have you recently changed both fuel filters? Drained the water out of the HFCM?
Can you pull the cap off of the secondary fuel filter and then have someone turn the key on so you can watch the fuel bowl fill? It should fill in 5 seconds, so make sure the person at the key is ready to turn it off.
Every owner of a 6.0L should have a fuel pressure gauge. Lots of guidance on that will come up in a google search. It can identify lots of fuel system problems and prevent you from damaging the VERY EXPENSIVE injectors!
Also, you should get the ForScan Lite app for your smartphone. $5 download. Also you will need an ELM327 OBDII adapter. WiFi for iOS and BlueToooth for Android. The BAFX brand of adapter works the best IMO.
With ForScan Lite, you can get a thorough scan of codes and you can pull engine data.
When you get that, it would be good to post data on your high pressure oil system (ICP pressure, ICP volts, and IPR % duty cycle), and your FICM (Fuel Injection Control Module) volts (MPower, LPower, and VPower).
In the meantime, you need to tell us if the 04 is an early 04 or late 04. You can tell easily by the location of the ICP sensor (late 04 the ICP is on the passenger valve cover).
