Default engine trouble

Hello from VA! I have a friend with a 97 F-350 service truck, with a 460, 4WD, and auto transmissions. He just bought it, with 114,000 miles on it. The engine runs good, but he does have an intermittent problem- when he is excelerating, sometimes it pulls very strong, and other times it is very sluggish, and then picks back up. He has replaced plugs and wires, and put on a new TPS.
Has anyone experienced a similar condition? No check engine light has come on, and it is throwing no codes. None the less, it does not always run strong. Any advice or insight would be greatly helpful and appreciated!
A little about me- I live in the beautiful Shenandoah Valley of Virginia, and I install tile and other floor materials for a living. I drive an 04 E350 van with a 5.4, and a 95 Jeep YJ.
Blessings to you all.
Mark

Thats an excellent question, and where we are right now. He doesn't know what the fuel pressure is doing, but we are looking for the tool to check it. Also, he has not run the truck on the other tank, yet, so I suggested doing that and seeing if it stillbehavesthe same.
He took it to a local transmission shop, who had suggested looking into the fuel pressure regulator. Gordon had changed the fuel filter, and had found a bunch of gunk in the thing. At this point, it would appear to be a fuel delivery problem.
