f250 with 351 4x4 convert to aod?

Looking at an f250 4x4 in need of a new transmission. Is it a simple switch to put the 4 speed auto aod in it? If so, with stock tires, what kind of mpg can I expect with the aod?

It is a 1994 with a 351. Presently has a 3 spd auto tranny, with 4x4.
