Did you tap into the wires right at the sending unit ? If so I would suspect you tapped into a ground wire instead of the signal wire. You didn't state in the original post what the gauge was reading, was it reading full or empty ? It does appear that the gauge is working. It does look like you may have to lower the tank and remove the sending unit .
You can hook up the wires to the sending unit with it out of the tank and move the float with the key on and the dash gauge should respond to whatever position you have the float in. That is the best way to confirm whether it is good or not working.

I'm pretty sure Ford still offers just the float... if it's a metal float,it can be repaired.....be very careful to remove any gasoline in it,by heating it at low temperature slowly.Letting it heat up in the sun,or using a hair dryer would do the trick.Be careful of any gasoline vapors! Then it could be soldered.I know how pricey those tank units are,but check Ford Parts - Silver State Ford Parts ,they're pretty good.

fuelpump
its a plastic float, already tried stuff from auto zone, to repair, they said it would work in gas tank, Ha, It just snaps on the end, simple but can't find one. Have tried all the salvage yards too. Thanks. I guess I'll try ford dealer.
