Glow plug problem
My 2004 f250 super duty needs glow plugs but when I look them up there are 2 different lengths. I can't figure out which one via vin and we can't find the engine number...any suggestions?
I assume you are talking about the 6.0L diesel. If so, where is your ICP sensor located? This will tell you exactly which glow plug you need (because it identifies which engine you have).
The '04's had the '03 engine until 9/29/2003. Then (after that date) the '04 truck was upgraded to include an '04 engine. This upgraded engine relocated the ICP sensor and changed the piston combustion area geometry (among other things).
If you install an early (longer) glow plug into an updated '04 engine, you stand a high chance of damaging the engine.

Well, ok. I still would find out for him. It is important!
The ICP sensor is what measures the pressure for the high pressure oil system (used to actuate the injectors). The sensor can be behind the turbo (for the '03 engine that uses the longer glow plugs), or in the updated ('04) location which is on the passenger side valve cover.
The '03 engine glow plugs use a buss bar system. The '04 uses a harness.

God help me, I'll try to find it. I'm starting to think I may just need to live with it not wanting to start in the winter. I've never had this much trouble getting parts for a vehicle
