Default Having Trouble Checking the ATF level in my 2004 F250 (4R100)

Hi Guys,
I’m having trouble accurately checking and making heads or tails of the ATF level in my 2004 F250 Super Duty (4R100 Transmission).

I’m following all the specified steps in the owners manual. (Drive at least 20 miles, park, leave running, slowly shift through all gears, check ATF level while idling in park in order to get a “hot” reading). However when I initially pull the dipstick it’s dry. I wipe it, re-insert it, pull it out, and the fluid level is just above the cross-hash area on the “D” where it says “Don’t Add If in Cross-Hash”.
What’s going on? I don’t know if I’m too low or too high. Pulling the dipstick and seeing it dry scares the crap out of me, but once I re-insert it then pull it back out, it’s a translucent pink “film” that stops slightly above where it’s supposed to be.

Has anyone experienced anything like this? Why is the dipstick dry on the initial pullout, then wet after it’s wiped, reinserted, and pulled out again? I don’t know whether to add fluid or take some out.

The truck is driving and shifting fine, but I’m worried the fluid level is off and I’m going screw up my tranny.

Any help or insight would be greatly appreciated.
