my 93 f2504x4 5.8 351 is squeeking bad!!
i am having a squeeking noise that seems to be coming from my engine. i thought it was my idler pulley and my tensioner pulley so i replaced both. but the noise was still their then i put a new serpetine belt on. i had a local shop clean all the pulleys on my truck. the noise stopped for a couple of days but came right back again. the noise never dissapear whether at idle or cruising speeds. but at around 40mph it cuts out for like a half of a second but comes right back. i have no clue what is wrong with it please help me.
Couple things to try...
If you don't have a listening stephescope, you can 'very carefully' place a tube or long screw driver ect against your ear, placed against the nose/rear case of the alternator, and also the water pump towards the front bearing area.. You can/could also pop the belt back off and give the water pump and alternator a spin and listen for your squeak/squeal.. Do all of these at what ever temp you hear the noise the most.. Also, listen at the base, and towards the main body of the distributor as the shaft/housing can sometimes run dry and will squeal/squeak intermitten, or full time.. Check the fan clutch as well..

i did take the belt off and spun evry pulley and i just found the ac clucth bearing gone but i and some mechanics dont think that will make the loud squeek that i describe. evry pulley seems fine a shop used a stethoscope and suspected that it might be a power steering pump but they said it would make a very different sound and said no other pulley had any squeek to it. also every time i put a new belt on it theirs no squeek until a few hours in or the next day. i cant really tell if my pulleys can be misaaligned. but thankyou so very much and if you have anymore opinions please post them. thanks
Probably depends on what 'gone' means as far as the AC bearing.. 'Most' times the/a bearing will growl, or make a whirring sound, but if heated enough, or dried out/galled, can make a squeal/squeak, or even drag the belt (or worse) if there's enough resistance.. Idlers usually will 'chirp', or might squeal if their real bad, but you've ruled them out with new.. Don't rule out the distributor sfaft/housing as a source until checked.. Has thrown many a tech.. If the squeal/squeak is constant, start the truck with the belt removed and if the sound is still there, it rules out and pulleys, drives, pumps, alt, ect.. Belt misalignment usually won't cause a belt to squeak/squeal, (especially new) but can shorten the life of one, and may shread one eventually which might cause a lack of contact/squeal..
