Default TRUCK PROBLEMS HELP!!!!!

CAN ANYONE HELP!!!!!! Hi, We have a 1976 Ford F-250 High boy with a 390 in it. We parked it a few months ago because the starter went out. Last week we put a new starter in it and it tried to start. It has a manual choke on it so naturally when it starts it dies for the first few times. So we thought it was gonna run, then all of a sudden we got just a click. In the past this was a soelinoid issue. So we replaced that. No such luck. Well, a buddy came by (who thinks he knows it all) and while my husband was in the truck looking for something this kid tried to cross jump something around the solenoid area and shot out sparks a foot tall. Since then, when we would hook up the battery even with the key off, the negative cable would get red hot in less than a minute. It started to boil the battery and it was blowing steam out. My husband went and bought a manual. I was reading something about if the alternator was bad it would cause this. So we disconnected it. The battery does not get hot now but we still have just the click issue. WE are ready to give up and sell her. But we do not want to. Can anyone give me a suggestion of what to check for? We tried 2 soleniods. And before the spark issue all of the lights would come on. After that happened we had nothing. After we disconnected the alternator we now have our lights back. My husband semms to think it is now a wiring problem, but we do not know where to start to look. Any help will be appreciated.
