Default AC Leak

Hello everyone.

So my grandmothers AC on her vehicle is leaking Freon. I can see dye on the backside of the compressor. There is a small plate that bolts to the back side with two 10mm bolts. My question is, what is that plate for? Is there a seal that I can purchase to fix the leak or do I need to get her a new compressor? Any help is greatly appreciated

Grandma will probably need a new compressor, and other parts. I have an '05 500 that belonged to my Mom. The AC leaked. She took it to the dealership, and was told to replace the compressor. I just looked at the Repair Order, and the bill came to about $1300 (Compressor-$850, Labour- $400). At the time, Aug 14, 2014, she had 43k. I am sure you might find a repair place that might be a little less for a fix. This has been a problem with Ford for a long time. My 500 has 56k. I have owned it since Apr 2015. Best riding vehicle I have ever owned. Please feel free if you have any more questions. There is probably a lot regarding the AC in this forum. Good luck to your Grandma. They are great!

I will be doing the work so no labor cost. I was just hoping that maybe it was a seal behind the plate or something that was replaceable instead of having to do a whole new compressor. Thank you for the info

Default control valve

I have an '06 Mercury Montego, and would completely lose my a/c when idling, after going to several forums, I learned their is a pretty cheap (like $28) valve that goes bad and is located on the back side of the compressor. My mechanic didn't think it would work, but I had him evacuate the Freon, replace the valve, and recharge the system, now I have a/c and didn't have to pay for an entire new compressor.

Sounds like you just need a new valve.
