Replace driver outside rear view mirror glass

Replace driver outside rear view mirror glass
Went on youtube to search how to do this on a 500. NADA. If someone here has done this please let me know. I did move the rear view mirror around as there may be something back there that would allow the back plate to pop out. Is it possible to tape the mirror, and lightly tap on it until it breaks? Is it necessary to remove the inside door panel? Thanks!

Thanks for your help! Two days ago I figured how to remove the back plate. It was very easy! I broke the mirror, removed all the dried adhesive, and pretty much prepared the surface for a new piece of glass. I did go to Ford Parts site, and found the diagram for the driver side rear view mirror. On Feb 26 for less than $16, including free shipping, I ordered a replacement mirror. The Ford Parts site wanted $64, but I don't know if that was the mirror and back plate. I have a 2005 500 SE. The VIN is: 1FAFP231X5G164432 . Thank you very much for a reply. I will check out your site!

Thank you for the diagram. It is the same one I saw on Ford Parts. Yes, I bought an aftermarket mirror. It really wasn't too hard to disassemble the back plate from the motor. There are a couple of these (mirror & plate) on eBay. It was sad that the eBay seller had terrible customer service. I wasn't planning on giving him a 5 star rating, so he refunded my money and cancelled the sale. I just wanted to do no feedback and call it a day.One thing about that back plate it is one heck-of-a piece of plastic!
I just checked out the price for the mirror w/plate, and the price is very reasonable.

I am happy to hear that you got the issue resolved! Most pieces of plastic related to the mirror are quite sturdy because they have to hold up in the harshest of conditions. Let me know if you need anything in the future.

Hi all. Sorry to bring up an old thread but I need advice. How do I remove the mirror glass from the motor. It is loose and wobbly now but I am hoping to repair/tighten/do something to help it. I am hoping not to break the mirror glass in the process. TIA for your help.....

akaskoot: If I remember using my thumbs I pushed the mirror down at the bottom as far down as I could. The mirror glass is attached to a hard rubber plate. It snaps out if you pull on the top. I used a strong flashlight so I could get a better view behind the mirror. Hope this helps.
