Default SYNC update

Has anyone updated the SYNC software on a 2011 model?
The Ford update web site says they have updates for all versions of SYNC but after entering my VIN and downloading their update and creating the USB thumbdrive it appears to do nothing when inserted in the USB port of the car..
After contacting my local Ford dealership Service dept they say I have to purchase an SD card and use that to update the SYNC.
If true I'm disappointed I have to pay for an update for a 2011 version but new versions of SYNC have free updates..
My real goal is to get updated maps on the Navigation system.
Has anyone successfully done this for a 2011 model ??
Thanks

For your year/model I believe the Navigation maps are loaded onto a SD card which is inserted next to the USB and audio input ports, if you do have this SD navigation card then you will need to buy a new card to have updated maps, its a dumb system that they changed with later model years.
For the sync update, if you do have a SD card then I do not believe a Sync update will update anything substantial in the navigation system.
My dealer has had quite a few customers not be able to complete Sync updates themselves using the Ford customer site. We charge 1.0 hours labor to update sync with the newest version, its a pain in the *** as the special ford sync website doesnt always work and/or crashes, when it does work without any issues it takes about an hour but Ive had them take up to three hours before.
