Default Engine help?

Hello I have a 2000 ford focus with a 2.0l zetech motor in it and the check engine light came on.Then it started knocking a little and the oil light came on.We pulled the dipstick out and the oil was very pastie and the oil filter seemed really heavy. I just replaced the oil (and filter)and found out that the oil was no more than a quart low.It will start but it misses a little and seems like it wants to stall a little bit at an idle. Its my moms car and she was driving it so I dont know exactly what it did but it hasent been tuned up at all.I think she even has the factory installed plugs and wires in.Do you guys have any ideas what did this (just low oil?),what the motor is going to do or how I can fix it?Sorry to take up your time.Any help would be appriciated.

Tank You,
T.J.

Pastie oil, to me, implies water in the oil. It could be a crack in the head/block or blown head gasket (most likely). Do a compression check and a cooling system pressure test. It doesn't look good from here.

Best of luck.
