Rough/High idle at startup

Rough/High idle at startup
2005 focus 2L duratec. Only mod is a k&n fipk intake.
When car isstarted, especially now in the colder weather,it revs around 1800rpm and takes forever to mellow out. It slowly drops to under1000rpm in probably 5 minutes, but its a very rough descent with surges and drops in the rpm. It runs great once it's warm, but those first few minutes sound and feel awful. The idle is pretty rough even when it iswarm, but I figured that is becuase it's a 4 banger and it idles so low (700-800rpm). Thinking of changing spark plugs as a start, but with just under 100,000km (60k mi) I really shouldn't have to. Any advice ?
Also, highway driving:right around 3000rpmon flat ground or going downhill, the engine has ocassionally lostresponsiveness to the gas pedal. Itkind of surges +/-100rpmfor5 or 6 cycles, then breaks out of it and is okay again, untilthe rpmsreach 3000 again.IfI stomp onthe gas as soon as this starts, it will kind of bog down for a split second then accelerate past the 3000rpm mark, and it's okay. Has anybody else experienced this or know how to fix it?It's annoying having to watch the tach so closely going down a hill.
Thanks!

RE: Rough/High idle at startup
I've been reading about "DPFE Sensor Failure" for older foci, and was wondering if it applies to duratecs. Could this be problem with my car? It sounds like I need to bypass my EGR valve to determine if my sensor is shot, at which point I have options, but would this be an appropriate place to start or is it a waste of time? thanks

My '95 Contour 2.5 did that too. And my current '02 Mitsubishi Galant is even worse. I think it's intended to do that but I can't imagine why. It's very annoying and wastes gas when warming up. I would think it would chill out to a normal idle RPM after like 30 seconds, donno why it takes so long or why it has to start idling at 1600, what the heck?

RE: Rough/High idle at startup
yes this is the problem my ford focus lx 2002 has 6,712 miles on it . at first my dash board went dead so i got a battery and a starter next i changed every thing with ford parts but every time in morning the car would run rough now i see that
the problem is faulty dpfe sensor . when will ford take responabily for this problem as a owner this has cost me lots of money and time . if we complain to the company maybe they will take a notice and fix this or rebate us for charges what do you think ? what happened to the lemon law this sure is one of them !!!!!!!! Let's see, the dealer has detemined that all your problems come from a faulty dpfe sensor. Ford did take responsiblity for the faulty ones, they were on recall notice to owners about 4 years ago, where were you?
