Default 1998 Ford E250

Morning all,

New to Ford van ownership. I have a 1998 Ford E250 that has the 4.2L V6 in it. The hose that runs from the air filter to the throttle body XC2Z-9B659-AA is shot. It appears its a discontinued product. Is there a suitable aftermarket hose you can buy? I've searched eBay and these forums and it appears none are to be found.

Thank you in advance.

Those hoses are usually a dealer item..
There maybe some available in a salvage yard.

What happened to the original hoses ? Any chance to repair ? They were rubber , and maybe a tire repair kit might do ????

There maybe some available in a salvage yard. The owner of the van died back in 2019 and the van sat in his mom’s driveway until I bought it in Feb. I didn't have time to start working on it until just now.

I own a BMW restoration business and business is brisk since people are hanging on to their cars now. I've given it the BMW treatment by replacing all the hoses, gaskets, filters, pulleys, belts and changed all the fluids. What I'm up against is a hanging front left brake, service engine soon light with P1000, P1538, P1127, P1408 and P1116 codes and probably bad gas. Before I go chasing my tail on parts I want to make sure I'm not fighting vacuum leaks.

I just purchased the maintenance manuals for it but they haven't arrived. The van has rust on the passenger side floor where your feet would rest and in the rear panels behind the rear tires. It’s a 1998 E250 4.2L cargo van with 207,000 miles. It was well maintained until 2019 when it was parked.

I’m not 100% sure what I’m going to do with it I’ve got eleven other cars including a Dodge Ram 1500. A van would come in handy for hauling stuff in the rain but space is at a premium and every time a want to drive a different car I’ve got to do the BMW shuffle.

I could easily drop $5k on this thing and I’d still have a 98-cargo van.

I’s spent the last week removing mice nests out of it. I’ve had to remove every piece of plastic, dash, cowling, duct work, seats cushions, doghouse, door panels and even the plastic piece on the back under the rear doors had mice nests under them. I can finally get into it now without smell mice pee. Ford must use something different than BMW in their wiring because if it was a BMW they would have eaten every wire in the car. Instead, the mostly ate the seat cushions and dragged 5 billion acorns into it. Yesterday while working on it I saw one drop out of the engine bay so tonight I'm going to set some traps before they set up another home in the van.

And while mildy annoying the stearing wheel is sticky. There is nothing on it. Nothing I've used to clean it so far has worked. Any suggestions?

With your background and experience you should be able to handle the codes.

As far as the steering wheel, I have see a few, pretty common, but never had to do anything about that, maybe, replacement is in order, don't know.

Once mice get into a vehicle and have a litter that gets roasted, quite a challenge to get rid of that "fragrance"

Once you take a look at that caliper, you most likely will see what is causing the problem. Gotta admit,,,,,,,,,,,you do have a challenge on your hands from mother nature lol.
Fords don't have squealers on the pads , so you need to keep an eye on pad wear.

You might also consider replacing the thermostat and water pump while in there.

Spent most of yesterday working on the van. I did a smoke test on the engine yesterday and the had a huge vacuum leak at the oil filler neck on top the valve cover. After I got it fixed I had smoke blowing out of the bottom of the EGR valve. Not being a Ford guy I'm not 100% sure that normal but I can't imagine a vaccum leak on the EGR valve is a good thing. Replaced the EGR valve with a Motorcraft EGR valve (PN 5123-02101601 thats for a 4.2L V6) and I'm still failing the Key On Engine Running (KOER) Self-Test P1408. I didn't have time yesterday to continue the smoke test to see if I had any additional vaccum leaks. Since it had a mouse problem I want to make sure no wiring or vaccum lines are chewed up before I throw any more parts at it. While I had the EGR valve off I cleaned the port behind it since it was about 80% plugged.

I suspect the P1000 code will go away one I can drive the van for awhile. I've never seen that code on a BMW and in my research it appears the code will go away once you drive the van and it has an opportunity to complete its self testing.

The P1538 IMRC Bank 2 stuck open is still present. It could still be a vaccum leak but I'm leaning towards it's the IMRC or the little arm since I don't have a P1537 code also. Could be totally off base. I really don't want to pull the intake. If I do have to pull it is there anything I should do? (While I'm in there)

The last code P1127 before I change the O2 sensor I want to make sure the wiring is good and it's not being triggered by a fuel condition I'm not aware of yet.

Thank you for the replies.
