Default Broken Oil Pan

Hi guys,
A month ago, I went to a shop for an oil change and for new tires. Today, I heard a sharp noise coming from the front as I was starting my 2005 Freestar. I stepped out and saw some cast metal pieces lying on the ground and a pool of engine oil. I haven't try to turn the engine on yet but when I put the pieces together, it looks like an internal impact shattered the pan and opened a window approximately 5 in by 6 in.

Do you guys have any guess what happened to the oil pan? Is it a sign of an internal damage? Can oil change result in this kind of stuff?

Best

I have seen a few of these and what happened was the cold engine was revved up before the oil cold get to the bearings and a connecting rod went out through the block or pan. We know it had oil in it because it is all over the ground.

Of course this could have a different cause like if the engine was jacked up by way of the pan. More thorough investigation of the pieces might provide some clue to just what happened Look up through the hole in the pan and see if you see a connecting rod dangling in there. If there is, the crank could be jammed in place . Can the engine be turned over MANUALLY ?
