Default 1988 2.9 2WD tranny removal

How hard is it to remove the transmission from this truck? Does the exhaust have to come down?

My input shaft bearing is shot, and I'm being quoted over 250 just for labor to remove and reinstall
the tranny.

I found a completely rebuilt unit for $750, and I'll do that if I can do the labor myself.. That exhaust looks like it'll be a PITA to remove, but it almost looks like the bellhousing will clear it.. Anyone know for sure?

If I can't do it myself, I can't justify putting that much money into this old of a truck..

If you think you might be able to handle it I would get a manual from the auto part's store.

there is a flange lip around the doghouse which interferes with this job. if you do the job, beat that flage lip flat against the body before you reassemble. it gives you the clearance needed. also if you replace the clutch DO NOT reface the flywheel! use only NEW OEM parts including throwout bearing. it sounds to me like a fair price to have it done and i've done this job myself before. pay the man and work an extra shift of overtime at work!
