Default 1997 Ranger Electrical Problems

I have a 1997 Ford Ranger and I have experienced all or most of the problems of other Ranger owners, door sensors, ABS Light, check engine light, gas Gage won't work, etc.

My problem is this. I replaced the alternator about 3 months ago and all was fine. About 2 months ago the truck wouldn't start, like the battery was dead. I have one of those rechargeable jumpers, so I jumped it and it took right off. I can let it run or drive it and as soon as I turn off the key and attempt to restart it, it's dead again. This went on for about 2 weeks and I took it to a local auto parts shop and they checked the charging system and said everything was ok. Like a miracle, the problem stopped for about 3 weeks then it came right back and that's where I am now. I have to jump it every time I start it. I have noticed a "whining" sound either in the radio or immediately behind the radio/glove box area that I never noticed until this problem started.

Can anybody help?

Thanks in advance,
Phil

You may have to have this looked at on a scope. The noise your describing sounds like you may have a bad diode in the alt. It will look good on test, but the old fashioned diode test on a scope will show up the problem. If the noise follows the engine rpm, then I would say, probably a new alt is in order.

Thanks Oldtimer35! As stated, I just put in a new (reman) alt about 3 months ago, but I know it's definately possible for even something "new" tohave a bad part. I'll have it checked out.

I can hear a "whine" that gets higher in pitch as I rev the engine and I wasn't sure where it was coming from, but it didn't happen till I started having the starting problems.

Thanks again for your help!

Phil

I had several 98 E350 van chasss buses and they would have a similar problem, like an old battery in cold weather, jump in the moring run all day and even start after short shut downs. The next morning (or 4 to 6 hour shut down)dead as a door nail. The diode in the alternators fail and allow for discharge event though gauge shows charging. I would take the alternator back for warranty swap, most have at leats a year (at minimum should have had 90 days).
