Default 1999 Automatic Transmission Issue

I drive an automatic 1999 ranger that is 4 wheel drive. When my truck is in drive and accelerating I can feel it shift hard when going through the gears. I am guessing it is the transmission. This is not something that I am experienced with. I would like to hear a few opinions on whether or not it is something that can be fixed by a rebuild kit to help further and damage or how I should handle this situation?

I am also curious as to how difficult it is to work on this transmission.

Thanks in advance!

How many miles are on the transmission and how many miles was it since the last service? Is the OD light flashing?

The transmission has around 220,000 on it. The OD light is NOT flashing.

....but you don't know when the last time the fluid and filter were replaced? I would do this first. Sometimes a clogged filter causes your symptoms.

Good luck.
