Default 4 wheel drive issue

I work at in a ski town and we have a lot of snow this year. All of a sudden when I click into 4 high my truck seems to have an intermittent noise/feeling. The only way I can explain it is that it's like I'm running over something and the truck makes a clunk noise. It's as if a tow strap or something is getting caught under the tire and then it breaks loose. I'm a truck guy and this is weird to me. It is not a constant clunk/learch but does it sometimes a lot and sometimes not much at all. The only thing I can thinl of is maybe my u joints on the front end are going bad. Or maybe (hopefully not) there is an issue in the transfer case. We have major snow and I work 70+ hours a week right now so any input would be great. On another note the truck is now having a crazy rev up while in park. The tac goes up to about 3500 and back down to 1000. ANy help would be great!

1999 ranger 4x4 with 3.0. I had the top end rebuilt last year. Did all the cats. Could the AC have something to do with this?
