Default kicks out of gear

My 98 Ranger XLT runs fine as long as I don't try to kick it into passing gear. When I do this, the trans goes out of gear, like into neutral.

Any idea what needs done?

Can you provide the trans code from the door sticker?

I looked up https://www.ford-trucks.com/articles...icker-decoder/

It says the code on my tag (T) means it's a 4-speed automatic (Ranger).
Not sure if this helps...
