Default 2001 Startup Issue

Good day all! New to the forum so please bear with me. Here's what I've got.

2001 SE 88k

Recently (4 times in the last two weeks), when I go to start the car, after a damp or rainy period and 1 time when it wasn't so bad, the car does not want to start . On initial startup it sounds like it wants to turn over but acts as if the car is flooded. If I apply pressure to the accelerator when I start and hold 1500-2500 rpms for 2/5 minutes it will stay running. Once started, the rpms register around 600. Also, once going, the car runs as advertised.

Once past the initial starting issue, it appears that the car will readily restart after short commutes. However, if the car sits idle for a long period (8 hours or more and noted above) I encounter the problem.

Fluids are all good. Plug wires appear to be tight. No noticeable damp or wet areas on the engine.

By no means am I a mechanic (very basic knowledge). Just looking for a place to start before going to the garage. If I left any needed info out, please let me know.

Thanks, Golferguy

[sm=welcomesign.gif] When was the last time the car was tuned up?

Check the idle speed control motor. Your symptoms are the classic signs one is failing.

Thanks for the replys. The records I have for the car show no tuneup being completed. I'm taking it to a garage tomorrow. I'll suggest the
idle speed control motor.

Would the fuel filter or fuel pump be a possibility?

Thanks, Golferguy

Hard starting in damp conditions usally relates to the spark plug wire's.
