Default 93 Taurus Shifter problem

Hello everyone, I have a 93 Taurus, 3.0 liter, auto tranny. My problem is when I apply pressure to the brake to put the car in gear the shifter will not move. I can really put some serious pressure on the pedal and it will release sometimes but not always. Anyway, I have no idea what actually releases the shifter through the brake pedal so I dont know where to start. Is it electrical, maybe a relay or switch? Thanks for any info.

Check the stop light switch that is located on the brake pedal where the linkage is attached that goes through the firewall to the booster. Should be a wiring connector there. The prt is fairly cheap nd relatively easy to replace.
