I have a 98 Taurus SE. I have had numerous tranny problems since I purchased it used almost 2 years ago. Now, the column shifter is stuck. I pulled in the driveway the other day and could not move the shifter to park. I had to put it in neutral, turn it off and leave the key in the ignition. After trying again today, the shifter will not go into neutral. When the engine is started (in drive) pressing the gas does nothing. The engine sounds as if it is already in neutral/park, although the dash indicates drive. Please advise...thanks!

 

There is a cable that attaches from the bottom of the column shift arm to the trans range switch and trans selector lever. Something may have become loose or the indicator on the dash isn't working correctly. One of those two items could be the cause of the problem.
