Default axle issues

I have a 90 FT with 79K original miles. Each of the front axles have a little play to them....where they kinda move back and forth length-wise from tranny to spindle. There is no vibration, and the CV boots are looking good. The constant clunking is what is starting to bother me. I brought the car to a garage to see what they'd say, and the guy says "that's the way all those older cars are". I said "this is the first car I've owned where the axles have some play to them", and he's like "how's the suspension gunna move if things are too tight"? I won't be going to THAT guy again! LMAO!
Can anyone tell me if this is safe for the mechanics of the car?....and also what I should do (if anything)?

Thanks in anvance for any help!
