i went to buy a tank of gas in my 1998 ford taurus dohc six cyl car. when i started the car and put my foot on the brake to shift into d it would not move. it was stuck. i tried putting in neutral and putting the emer brake on and moving to a gear but it would not move. i tried a few times and then started moving the brake pedal to a few different levels. eventually it was ok and it has not done it since. altho it did it one time when i got home. wife now driving car and it seems fine. any insight. help. thank you

I would advise to replace the Safety switch as so as possible...you may not be so lucky next time...it this goes bad...it goes bad real quick...

The brake light bulbs will not cause the problem. The brake switch or the connection is more than likely the cause. Ford's connectors are a real weak spot.
