My '05 Taurus has been plagued with a sticky gas pedal for close to a year. Sometimes a couple times a week, sometimes a few times a day. I've been able to experiment a few times when it happened on the open road with no traffic and found that if I hit the cruise control "On" and "Set" buttons simultaneously and then press "Coast", the gas pedal will come up with an audible "pop". The funny thing is that cruise control doesn't work and hasn't for over a year. I have read in some forums that a faulty cruise control cable can be the culprit. I'm inclined to agree. Does anyone know if it's a complicated fix?

Did you try the suggestions given in the first few posts of this thread?

If not give them a try because I have heard others having good luck with those approaches.

Well, for anybody still interested in this thread, I finally decide to fix the problem and it turned out easier than I had expected. After reading many different forums that discussed similar problems I looked at the throttle body and sure enough, there was the end of the cruise cable, disconnected. I reattached it, taped it to help keep it from popping off again, and now, after a year and a half, my cruise control works.
Time will tell if I've fixed the stuck gas pedal problem, but it's easy to see how the pin on the throttle mechanism could have gotten snagged on the end of the loose cable.

Thumbs down Sticky throttle on 2005 taurus

My 2005 taurus clocked @ 75 mph before i could get the car back to 0 again .. It scared my children and myself to death .. I put it in N then gave a swift push to pedal and it clicked .. But what happens when it doesn't click ..

Does your cruise control work normally?

I filed a complaint last year with the NHTSA when I heard they were investigating the issue. Heard later that they were taking no action because problem wasn't widespread, which is hard to believe! Like I said in an earlier post, mine was a simple fix. Reataching and securing the cruise cable gave me back my cruise control and fixed my runaway throttle problem.
