Default 1997 Expedtion, can anyone help?

I have a 1997 Expedtion, it's my baby high gas prices and all. I've had it about 10 years. Lately, its happened about 5 times now I will start the truck and it will turn over then die. Like its out of gas. I have taken it to my mechanic and had him check it out. He replaced the fuel filter and I also changed spark plugs and air filter. It happened again. The thing is if I let it sit for a few hours it will start right up and run fine for days. Then it does it again. So far I've been lucky and not stranded anywhere. When I told my mechanic he said he can't fix it till there's a problem. When it happened the first time I took it to him the next day and he he hooked up the computer to the car and it said there wasn't a problem. At the time it was running fine again, however the night before I couldn't leave my apt cause it wouldn't start. I am disabled, and on a fixed income. Anyone have any ideas why this is happening? I am thinking the fuel pump is slowly going out. I am really worried that I am going to get stranded somewhere. HELP!!!

Thanx in advance for any advice.

Ya know if the fuel pump has never been replaced and the vehicle has over 100,000 miles on the clock , you could be correct suspecting the fuel pump. The only problem is , after you have it replaced and the problem takes place again it's back to square one !

Thanx, I'm hoping maybe someone has had this problem and can lead me down the right path. Do you think I should take it to the dealership and have them run a diagnostic? My local mechanic is really good AND affordable, however maybe the dealership will have a better answer. The guy I use at the dealership looks out for me and I trust him. I just know it will be more expensive and on a fixed income it's a hard bullet to bite.
