Default 2017 Lincoln Contenental Glove Compartment Removal

I'm trying to replace the cabin filter and have looked at several videos, but I'm not able to remove the side panel of the consul to get to the fourth and final screw that holds the glove box.
All the tugging I can muster won't pull the panel off from near the dash.. I've never experienced anything like this before in any of my cars. What were they thinking? Maybe the shop manuals have another way? Perhaps it is worse than that the videos because it is a Black Label version?

Any help would certainly be appreciated.

First I don't know if this will be of any help or not.
Second,,, I have never worked on a 2017 Lincoln Continental glove box ,,,yet.
Sometimes if a panel is pushed into place with pull out retainers something like a flat blade or putty knife will put the force to remove in the right place without damaging anything.. The control is still with the person holding the tool. Force in the wrong place can break plastic parts so care is necessary to prevent too much pull and yet enough to have the retainer let go and come out. The blade has to be right next to the stuck retainer and carefully lifted to get it out.Do you think you want to try this?
Many times plastic parts are flexible enough to get the tool just under and next to the retainer.

Hanky,
I really appreciate your willingness to help. I've attached a few photos that might help to explain. I've managed to detach the panel near the console itself, but can't budge the front of the panel where it is adjacent to the glove compartment. If there are clips holding it down in the front, it is not possible to get something that is thin and still apply a prying pressure to the location of the clip which I think is further down in the panel. To pull on the panel and disconnect the clips the panel has to be pulled towards the glove compartment, but this is not possible with the glove compartment in the way. Perhaps the Black label trim has made the panel so stiff that the "bow" in the YouTube videos isn't possible. I think my only help would come from someone with shop manual excerpts or pictures, instructions, etc. If I am ever able to get to the filter, you can bet I'll leave that last glove compartment screw out!

Hanky,

Thanks for the reply. The clips holding the panel are too deep into the panel to get something stiff and slim enough to pry on them. The front of the panel is wedged into the glove compartment that you can't pull it back and free it from the clips. From the youtube videos it shows the side panel to be flexible enough to do this but maybe because the panel on a "black label" Lincoln is stiffer that this can't be done. I can separate the panel in the midsection and bow it out from the console but the front of the panel is a hard stop at the front because the glove compartment can't be removed entirely because to the final screw holding it in. I think I need someone that's had this joyous experience to chime in or someone who has access to a shop manual that can advise how it is done. See photos of the points I'm talking about. Again thanks for your replying and trying to help me out.

Phil

Hanky,

Very sorry about such a late response, however it wasn't because I wasn't trying. I attempted to reply twice with pictures, but it never got posted. I'm new to the website so it might be something I'm doing wrong. Any way I'll try and describe how I finally got to the filter. The side panel on the console does have to be detached so that it can be moved back to expose the final screw. To do that, you have to start but removing the faceplate on the A/C controls for the rear seat passengers. This allows the complete panel to be detached so it can slide backwards. This is because there are two clips at the front of the panel that must be dislodged by pulling backwards on the panel. Also not covered in the Youtube videos that are out there is the fact that the panel on the right side of the glove compartment (ilabeled "air bag") also has to come off. Anyone finally getting to the filter has to be careful with the cover plate tabs as they are fragile. The air flow is down. Hope this helps any future DIY Lincoln Continental owners.
Phil
PS: I seriously considered cutting a slot in the glove compartment for future changes, but just couldn't bring myself to butcher such a beautiful car.
PSS: Thanks so much for your reply.

Thank you for the update and info.
Not too many Lincoln owners do repairs on their vehicles , so there may not be that much info available.

There is always a certain degree of pleasure in a job well done ! You earned it !
