To specialize will pay more. But to be able to specialize, you need a lot od background with hands on experience. I have seen too many young people get lost because it does not act like it did when they were working on it is school. So I would become a good all around tech first, then pick the area I was really interested in. A good drivability tech is worth more than a brake specialist.

I believe a good thorough vehicle inspection before purchase requires a thorough inspection UNDERNEATH the vehicle !

There are loads of great looking vehicles out there for sale that are so rusted from exposure to road salt that to repair that damage is very costly, so they get rid of it, sometimes for a lower price to prevent a total loss. Don't know if there are any disclosure laws to minimize or prevent that.
