Try running some CETANE boost in the fuel. Believe it or not, but a lot of knock on a diesel is from pre-ignition.

This is normal for the 7.3. Trust me i have been a Ford dealer Tech for 20 years.

The problem is fuel pressure. Ford came out with a long lead injector for the number 8 cylinder but it didn't do much. The idea was if they held number 8 open longer it would get more fuel and reduce the noise. The #8 cylinder is the last to get fuel and by that time the pressure has dropped too much and causes what Ford calls " Fuel Cackle ".

The only way to fix it is to install an adjustable regulator and new pump.

Don't worry though it won't damage the engine. It's just annoying.

If you are in Orlando look up Mobile Oval Automotive. They're the best Ford diesel mechanics in Florida. http://www.mobileoval.com
