Our first curiosity is could the thermostat you installed be defective ? If the heater hoses don't get hot after it runs for 10-15 minutes I would remove the thermostat and see if it is closed completely. If closed place it in a pot of water heat the water and watch it to see if it opens and closes when the heat is removed and the temp goes down. If all that checks out at least you are reasonably sure the thermostat is OK. It should be a 195 degree thermostat.
Did you compare the water pump to the one you removed ? They should have been identical, impeller housing etc. Could you have possibly moved the wire from the temp sensor where it is not making a good connection? I've given you some checks to make , let us know what you found .

Did the thermostat have a bleeder hole in it? If you have air in the cooling system, the heater core is the last place air usually resides and takes a while to burp out. Air in the heater core results in no heat. Temp gauge no moving is also a symptom of air in the cooling system. Without a bleeder hole in the T-Stat, air will set at the back side of it and keep is from reaching opening temperaure. ROBERTSHAW T-Stats will normally have the bleeder hole.

the day i changed the thermostat i had heat, that night is when the water pump went out, I'm not familiar enough with the thermostat to tell if there is a bleeder hole but on one of the hoses to the heater core does have a cap thing on it.
