starts when cranking,die's in the on position

starts when cranking,die's in the on position
79 f150 4x4 351 auto when I'm cranking it over it start's up but the minute I let go of the key and it returns to the run position it die's. It does work once in awhile but it never works when I need itto.any help would be greatly appriciated.how would I go about checking the key switch to see if it's bad

97 Taurus 3.8L V6, suddenly die while cruising. Couldn't restart, wait 30 min, it restarted then die
