Default What is that clicking noise?

96 escort 1.9L: what is the clicking or tapping noise coming from around the intake manifold & fuel rail which is also causing only 3 cylinders to run & occassionally only 2 cylinders to run.The clicking increases as the RPMs increase and is more prevalent under a load as acceleration from a stop. items replaced: fuel regulator, coil pack, plugs & wires. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, jIM

Listen tot he fuel injectors using a stethoscope or a piece of hose. Listen near the valve cover for lifter noise. Use a noid light to check the injector wiring. Check the timing belt.
Follow the trouble shooting section in the Haynes manual.

How can you tell you have three or two cylinder running?

well I simulated the engine symptoms by pulling 1 plug wire as it seems hardly noticeable but 2 wires pulled really reveals a rough running engine. since my original post the car has left me stranded as it stalled at a stop sign and initally it acted like the starter was froze. The battery is good and after 10 minutes it decided to crank over but not even fire. So I trailered it home and havent had a chance to investigate. What are symptoms of a bad crank sensor? thanks jim

No spark during cranking, because the ECM has no idea when to fire, so it doesn't fire at all. If CPS dies on you, so does the engine - instantly.

On my V8 4.6, the fuel pressure after the pump primes the system is 40 PSI, and drops to 32 PSI when the engine idles. If you speed up, the fuel pressure goes up to about 34-35 PSI (wide open throttle). 25 PSI should be good enough to get some fuel in. Are your injectors opening? Listen to them (or feel them, they should be clicking as they pulse)

I'd bet this is just a blown engine. Escorts run just like this when they die. Usually, it's because a piston comes apart.
I'd start with a compression test. VEry simple, Very determining for this problem. Fix the base problem, and most if not all the symptoms will go away.

I think your right,I put a wratchet to the crank and as I cycle the engine it has a jam spot with the spark plugs removed. jim

Sorry if I was right in this case. Looking on the bright side, these engines were easy to pull and repair.
You shouldn't have any problem with it.
Merry Christmas to all!
