Default Why? Reverse lights on while in 2nd gear

I have a 1972 Gran Torino Sport with a 302, three on the tree. When I am in 2nd gear, my reverse lights are on, they turn off when in 1st or 3rd. Can someone help me identify the source of the problem?

Make sure the linkage is tight. If it is sloppy, it may trip the reverse lights when you shift up in second.

Default linkage is proolly loose

i agree with Way2old

Your linkage might be loose or misaligned...ive seen this type of problem many times where car wouldn't start because linkage was sloppy and NSS (neutral safety switch) was misaligned. Many cars have NSS and backup light switch all in one package on either the collumn or shifter linkage.

Any problems starting car in park or neutral?? Do you have to "wiggle" the shifter to get it to start? If so, its probably misaligned or linkage is worn out. if not..then perhaps you have bad wiring sensor in collumn.
