Default 1996 E150 Econoliner Keyless Remote Entry Question...

I just bought a 1996 E150 van. It has electric door locks but no remote keyless entry. There is no remote module installed under the dash, but there is a cable and plug hanging where the module would have been if the option was ever installed.
It may be a little naïve to ask, but if I buy an original type module and plug it into the cable, will it work, or will the ECM also need programming?
Thank you in advance for any help you may be able to offer.

Please check my signature below and provide your engine size.
Do you have power window?
Additionally take a pic of your inner door panel, the upper section only.
You said cable and plug hanging please take a pic of that as well.
You said no remote keyless entry does that mean you have to open the door with your key? And when you unlock the driver door, do the passenger and side and rear door also unlock together? If not how do you know your van has electric door lock?
When you open the driver door the dome light illuminates or not? How about the passenger, side and rear?
