Question 20 minutes to fill gas tank

Please pardon my ignorance if I don't know the right terms to use. One day I went to fill my tank and the gas pump kept shutting off. The tank would only take 3-6 seconds worth of gasoline. One year later, my 2001 Explorer is now sitting in a bay with my 4th mechanic, including 2 at the Ford dealership. I have already shelled out over $1000 to have this problem not fixed. I was told there were spider eggs clogging the works, that there were air lock problems, and now today I'm told I need a new solenoid. The mechanic talked to some Ford people who said they were seeing a lot of this lately. I don't know who to trust anymore. I need this car to get through another couple of years and can't stand another winter of zero degrees and pumping for 15 minutes! Has anyone out there had this or a similar experience? Any guidance? Thanks in advance for any help.
