Default Engine Oil in Coolant

I have a 1997 Ford Expedition 5.4 liter engine with 247,000 miles. Never had any overheating issues or oil in the water. I now have fluid in the radiator that looks like it came from the oil reservoir and the oil level is off the stick. The engine idles and runs fairly smooth-seems to have an issue with #5 cylinder. I was thinking head gasket but no signs of smoke exhaust and no water in the oil and no exhaust bubbles in the coolant. Any other cause other than a cracked block? Maybe a freeze plug somewhere?

You didn't state if the vehicle was std or automatic. Could it be trans fluid from the trans cooler in the radiator?

No the trans oil level is good but the engine oil drains 2 or more quarts in the hour it took to start flushing the cooling system. I have an automatic transmission.

When the engine is running , oil pressure is higher than coolant system press so oil can get into the cooling syst ,however, when the engine shuts down coolant press is now higher than oil pressure so coolant should be getting into the oil.
Is the oil starting to appear soupy?

I have never had any sign of water in the oil or on the oil fill cap. I will add more oil this afternoon and run it long enough to mix and see if the oil is soupy.

The oil is fine. But if the oil was soupy what would that point to as a problem? I guess I have to deal with a cracked block or head. Is there an additive to the crankcase to seal a cracked block or head?

I wouldn't condemn the heads or block until further testing can confirm where the oil is going. There is no additive to do as you asked , as far as I know.
We take these things one at a time and use the process of elimination. Many times it is not as bad as it seems. I do think it's time to have a good shop check the engine out and pin down the cause after which you can make a decision as to just how much it will cost to correct.

Default Oil And Coolant Contamination

daddyblaize , Today 01:27 AM
I've been slaving over a 2003 Windstar for months.... working every weekend to replace an engine with a salvaged engine transplanting bits from the old onto the salvaged engine. I freshened the newer engine with new timing set, oil pump, water pump and crank and cam sensors. After completing and test driving, the next day found milkshake on the dipstick. I suspected the front-cover gasket, so I'm removing and resealing. I'm recalling I bored out the crank snout while accidentally using the wrong sized harmonic puller--not badly enough that the harmonic bolt couldn't be used so I ignored it. I'm wondering if a slightly damaged crank snout could lend itself to such as oil/coolant contamination?
