Default Engine problem

2006 Mercury Montego when started, it won't rev past 1800 RPMS. When I put in drive it bogged down and died. This started when driving it.
Have put in new fuel pump and filter.

Might be a good time to check for a plugged converter. Any rough running , misfires lately?

If the engine quit just like you turned the key off, would suspect something electrical.
If on the other hand it loses power more and more , it could be electrical , but I would be inclined to suspect a possible fuel starvation problem. A mechanical problem could also give similar symptoms, but we have to start someplace. To throw something in for good measure a poor electrical connection/supply for the fuel pump system kinda gets into the picture too.

I would suspect the vehicle has a poor ground connection for the fuel pump and level sending unit. You would need to check the ground connections right from the tank unit to wherever the ground wire goes ,most likely to a ground coming off the sheet metal or frame. Common problem where fuel pump quits working , gets replaced when all along it was a poor connection . They should always be checked before condemning a fuel pump.
