FE motor questions
I bought a 1976 ford f-100 and started a full restoration. The VIN number on the door said it had a FE 360 motor. When I pulled the motor out I found numbers that was not matching up. When I pulled the heads off i found the stroke to be around 3.98 and the bore to be 4.185. There is a A welded on the back of the block behind the fly wheel. The crank shaft has U1 stamped on it.
Cast # on side of block is C6ME-A. and under fuel pump 6H31. On the front of the block is has 352. The heads have D2TEAA on the outside and 4E24 under the valve covers. I think this is a 428 bored out. Anyone have anything else i can check or know exactly what i have?
Thanks

Ok, this will take some time. THe FE series of engines included the 332, 352,360, 390, and to a certain extent teh 427 and 428.
The 352 was used in cars, last year was '66. The 360 and 390 were used interchangably in the trucks, and 1976 was the last year for the 390 in the truck (it was last used in cars in 1972 or so).
They were all desigened the same, but the 427 and 428 were side oiler engines. Also, if I remember correctly, the 427 had the 4 bolt mains, and the front main cap bolts had 2 on the side that went into the eingine from the side, one on each side. They would be seen just above the oil pan, Usually blocked by the p/s pump. They were also very, very rare in the trucks, but they were out there.
That being said, the most likey case here is that this is either a 360 or 390; most of the parts were mostly interchangeable; if I remember correctly, the 360 and 390 used the same heads, oil pans, and intakes. I could be wrong, and if I am, I'm sure I'll be corrected on this forum.
The 360 (and 352) were about a 4" bore by 3.5" stroke. The 390 was about 4"X4".
Good luck!
