My 08 mondeo 1.8 diesel has developed a fault. It "coughs" every now and again. It is very brief and sometimes almost unnoticeable but can sometimes be enough to switch the cruise control off. Happens more often under acceleration and yesterday went into limp mode as it was doing it constantly. Turned off and restarted and the problem went back to as before only happening 3-4 times in a 50 mile drive
Does anyone have any ideas what this might be and how to fix it? Any help greatly appreciated.

Just about everybody that owns a diesel powered vehicle is or should be aware that clean and adequate fuel supply is required for good performance.
Just a reminder if the fuel filter has been overlooked it may be time to change it.
