When I don't know the answer, I found it pretty helpful to ask another question. Kinda gets me off the hook, kinda !
How many miles are on the vehicle, timing belt replacement is generally around 60,000 miles. To the best of your knowledge would you care to estimate if the recommended replacement interval has been somewhat exceeded? Sometimes when a belt breaks it takes out the crank sensor too. A few checks might help pin down just what happened..
A visual inspection of the belt, and knowing whether it is an interference engine or not are two good starting points.
500 yards is a pretty long distance , but don't know at what speed it quit and how much coasting was possible.
Maybe some of your answers will help.
It could also be something entirely different.
