We are trying to remove the rear drum, on a 2002 Taurus. We watched videos on YouTube, on how to do. It shows a special tool, that you insert into the slot used to adjust brakes, in and out. It is a tool that releases the rod, holding out the star adjuster, to keep it from adjusting in on its own. You insert this special tool, that allows you to adjust the shoes in. So you can slide drum off, over the small lip on edge of drum. We can not find where to purchase the tool. Or does anyone know a alternative way to remove drum?

 

You might try a few different sizes and/or lengths of regular blade screwdrivers. Most mechanics/techs have all sorts of tools and sometimes a screwdriver will do the job.
The trick is to push in the adjuster blade so you can turn the star wheel. One direction will be easier than the other the easy direction is usually the correct direction to bring in the shoes. Turning the drum is a good way to make sure you are turning the star adjuster in the correct direction.

Remember you must hold the adjusting pawl out away from the starwheel when backing off the adjuster. Since you will be replacing the brake hardware, which you should do, if you distort the adjuster blade new ones come with the kit. Do it all and do it right.
