Default transmission wont go in

ok so I'm new to this forum and thank you for being here. I have a 99 E-150 with the 4.2 V6. My trouble started when my oil pump failed. I naturally wanted to clean the oil pan and strainer, but found out it was either pull the engine or, as I decided remove the trans and lift the engine right side for clearance. All of that went well until on remantle with trans on a good tranny jack, I would get it started in, but when I would get it close (all bolts started)I noticed that the crankshaft was bound up locked and wouldnt turn at the front pulley. I have it in neutral, and I have the torque converter in properly and see all 4 studs engaged. I can turn the crankshaft just at the point the studs come thru the flywheel and the torque converter is engaged to it, but when I try to tighten the bolts (evenly) it binds up. Nothing wrong with tranny nothing broken and torque converter goes on input shaft properly. This is my first Ford, and I'm not sure if I'm missing a step. 220k on motor and all 6 cyl read 165psi to the pound. runs like a raped ape.

There should be indexing tabs on the converter hub that index with the pump gear of the trans. Are you sure they are in the right place and the converter is all the way in?

I believe so. It (torque converter) slides in and stops to where when you look directly along the front at the side, all you can see is the studs protruding. I will look and try again as it is still on the jack.

Thank you for the info, hanky. Took the time to replace the front converter oil seal just in case. The converter went in all the way. By the way, had a heads-up parts guy at local Ford dealer who told me about the 'one-use' converter mounting nuts. Back to re-mantling thanks again.
