Welcome... Introduce Yourself...
Noises can be hard to determine on an short explanation, and the 5.4 is no stranger to some 'normal' operating noises. Injectors make a ticking sound which is normal, and sometimes you'll hear cam timing components at idle (normal to a degree) that quiet just off idle and/or around 1200RPM. If a cam follower etc, sometimes the tapping noise with extend out beyond idle/lower RPM's. Exhaust leaks can mask themselves as tapping. Hard to know exactly what your hearing, but you might run it by a shop with experience with the 5.4 and ask them to have a quick listen. Also, youtube has quite a vids of different 5.4 noises, normal, and problematic sounds. If you could link us to one that best describes what your hearing, it may help with some direction..
I live in New Hampshire and drive an E-350 Super/Duty 12 passenger Van. The Van is white and I replaced the stock wheels with flat black rims that are 17’s and all-season extra treaded tires (TOWNFAIR TIRE). The exhaust is custom to give a nice beefy sound and a little extra push when needed (www.louscustomexhaust.com). To match the rims I have added a black roof rack with a matching RAGE extended cargo cage on top to give an outback look that has come in extra handy while traveling the East Coast.
I have joined this forum to get any assistance or advice when needed. Any resources shared will be much appreciated; we use the Van A.K.A War Wagon as our family road trip mobile. I have six children ranging in ages from a few months through age ten and an awesome wife that allows me to spend my very little extra cash on the Wagon.

Thanks to all for your informative information. I viewed the noise sounds of the 5.4 on youtube, I started with changing the oil to mobil 1 synthetic and a motorcraft filter. I then replaced the VCT solenoids, cleaned the mass air flow sensor, and replaced the air filter. The tapping and ticking has been reduced greatly. I'm going to run seafoam through the gas and the engine this weekend. Once it's time for an oil change I'll run seafoam in the oil prior to changing the oil. Truck is running great. I would like better gas mileage and info on how to get the keyless code, which is not on the module behind the back seat, I'm not going to the dealer.

Hi, I'm Marty Soll. I live with Maddie (a 4 legged furry roommate) in Estacada Oregon. I'm semi-retired Boeing engineer (please don't hold that against me). I drive a 1999 F350, 7.3L diesel, DRW, used primarily to tow my travel trailer (Maddie is also my travel companion).
Hello everyone. I log in as grendl from the beautiful state of Colorado. I just purchased a 2006 Crown Vic P71 that is in pretty good shape. A few things I need to get straightened out from the previous owner messing with it, but I'm pretty happy unit so far. I think he wired the stereo wrong, the check engine and temp indicator lites stay on and the temp gauge doesn't work at all.I think he either grounded something or tapped the wrong hot. Still need to take the back door panels off and figure out how to get them to open from the inside, going out today to see why the side lights /turn signals dont come on. Car runs great, still learning a lot about it but starting to fall in love with my 'new' car.Hope we have a lot of good years ! Glad I found this forum lots of P71 owners here.
