Default Help with 89 F350XL diesel shifting linkage

I am new to forum and not experienced with auto repair. Column auto shifting is not working but can be shifted into gear from under hood or below. Thinking that the problem is in the linkage within the steering column related to shift lever - need help!

I believe there was a problem with some of the bolts coming out of the lower end of the steering column containing the lower shift linkage, Did you have a chance to check them?
Also if you have a "dead" stick for a shift lever I have removed the steering column from the vehicle and replaced the potted metal tube that had broken internally. It is not a difficult job ,but if you don't have the patience to get into it you might consider giving the job to someone else.
