Default 01 windstar tranny leaking

01 windstar with a 3.8 engine with 100k miles leaks tranny fluid from the torque convert access cover. It only does it after the car gets hot then it practically pours out. From what I have read most likely the tranny is over heating cause fluid to vent out of the torque convert. Does that sound right to anyone? Also for fixing it does the whole tranny need to be replaced or just the torque convert? Thanks!

Usually when you get a trans fluid leak from the torque converter area , it comes from the front seal of the trans. It is possible that the trans vent is plugged and pressure is building up in the trans and that may be the weakest point , therefore the leak.
Most of the time the converter seal at the front of the trans leaks all the time but just may seem worse when heated.
If that is the actual problem, the trans does need to be removed, and the torque converter slipped off and the seal replaced and the trans reinstalled.
