Didn't Ford use heavy springs to support the hood or was it a prop rod?

they are spring. I've run into an issue where the the passenger side of the hood will not close.. this is not a spring problem.
and I don't understand how it occurred I've taken the hinge off the car, tighten it up... and still the hood is at least 1" up...
I've made all the adjustments I can...
thanks for your input
